The Fresh Grocer

The Fresh Grocer was founded in 1996 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as an independent supermarket company, and became a member of Wakefern Food Corporation's retailer-owned cooperative in 2013. The banner specializes in high-quality fresh foods, restaurant-quality take-home meals, and serving the needs of urban and suburban neighborhoods. The Fresh Grocer has grown steadily through the addition of independent family-owned operators joining the Wakefern cooperative. In 2019, Nicholas Markets (New Jersey) joined under the banner, and in 2022, Gerrity's Supermarkets converted its 10 northeastern Pennsylvania locations to The Fresh Grocer name. In February 2026, The Fresh Grocer expanded into New York City for the first time with a location at 523 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn, operated by Inserra Supermarkets. Today the banner operates 24 stores across greater Philadelphia, greater Scranton, western Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.
