About ShopRite
ShopRite originated in 1946, when a Del Monte Foods sales representative introduced a group of independent grocers in Newark, New Jersey to the concept of cooperative buying. Seven of them agreed, each contributing $1,000 to launch Wakefern Food Corp., incorporated on December 5, 1946. In 1951, the cooperative adopted the ShopRite name to consolidate its member stores under one recognizable brand. Today, Wakefern is the largest retailer-owned cooperative in the United States, with 45 member companies independently owning and operating more than 380 retail supermarkets across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. ShopRite has been the largest food retailer in New Jersey for close to 70 years and is also the number one grocer in the New York metropolitan area.
