About Giant Eagle

Giant Eagle's roots trace back to 1918, when three Pittsburgh-area families — the Goldsteins, Porters, and Chaits — founded Eagle Grocery, growing it to 125 stores before selling to Kroger in 1928. Bound by a three-year non-compete agreement, the founding families teamed up with two new partners — the Moravitz and Weizenbaum families, who had built their own chain called OK Grocery — and in 1931 formed Giant Eagle. The first Giant Eagle supermarket opened in 1936 on Brownsville Road in Pittsburgh. The chain expanded steadily through the mid-Atlantic and Midwest, and remains one of the largest privately held supermarket chains in the United States, with approximately 211 stores across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, and Maryland operating under the Giant Eagle, Market District, and Giant Eagle Express banners. In 2025, Giant Eagle sold its GetGo convenience store division to Circle K's parent, Alimentation Couche-Tard, refocusing on its core supermarket and pharmacy operations.
